  Juniper Level Botanic Gardens is seeking a Seasonal Garden Staff member to help care for a remarkably interesting world-class garden right here in Raleigh, NC. The predominant role of this position is pulling weeds on a routine and daily basis. This job will consist of going around and hand pulling weeds in predetermined problem areas in the garden. While not being a physically demanding job, it does however require bending, stooping and being outside in hot and humid weather. This job does not and will not require the person to use pesticides, but you may be around or exposed to these chemicals (proper safety training will be given upon hire). In the quest for new plants, JLBG has initiated over 80 botanical expeditions both domestic and international, since 1994. Horticulture Production and Nursery Manager
Plant Delights Nursery

  Reporting directly to the business owners, the ideal candidate will be a friendly, efficient, a positive problem solver, and a people person. Must be very detail and results oriented and open to change. This position has six direct reports and also hires, trains, supervises, and optimizes the entire nursery department's resources to ensure a consistent supply of the highest quality plant material for shipment.

PDN offers a casual dress code, a diverse staff, and a friendly working environment. Non-supervisory staff hours are 8-5 Monday-Friday + eight open nursery and garden sales weekends each year. Management hours are as needed above that threshold.

Responsibilities include:
  • Ensuring the grower team follows set production and irrigation protocols to maintain the highest quality plant material.
  • Working with plant health care specialist to ensure proper scouting and the most effective/least toxic treatments for pests and diseases are applied in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Scheduling production crew to ensure plant production and propagation keep up with needs.

Job Description:

  • Prioritize all aspects of growing operation with direction from nursery manager and efficiently supervise nursery assistants.
  • Oversee all aspects of greenhouse watering (automatic and hand watering) including supervision of waterers.
  • Regularly scout greenhouses (including propagation and specialty areas) and address issues found in a timely manner.
  • Manage crop nutrition (including nursery wide fertilization) and monitor with routine pH/salts monitoring program.

    Accurate records of inventory levels and location for easy retrieval is critical in keeping the department organized and efficient.  The Inventory Control Manager is responsible for communicating with all department managers and purchasing on inventory levels and locations in addtion to maintaining records of all transfers and/or disposals is a must.                                       

    This individual must be physically able to perform physical counts of product to ensure the accuracy of inventory in accordance to company policy and procedures.  Reconcilement of the inventory counts to the internal records must match to protect against inventory misuse and theft.  Must become an expert in utilizing the inventory computer program along with being a resource for all users of the system.
